Position Purpose

The Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist collaborates with leadership on the development, implementation, and execution of environmental, health and safety programs aligned with the Company’s mission, vision, and values. The position serves as a subject matter expert in the identification of risks and their respective solutions for meeting Raley’s standards and regulatory expectations. This key position routinely partners with management-level stakeholders in Operations, Distribution, Risk Management, Sales and Merchandising to achieve business goals of providing a safe and compliant work environment for team members, customers, and vendors. This job classification requires advanced knowledge of industry best practices in safety and relevant local, state and federal health, safety and environmental laws and regulations.

Compensation

The range displayed reflects the range the company reasonably expects to pay for the position. The actual compensation offered to the selected individual will depend on their relevant education, training, or experience, among other bona fide factors.

Expected Minimum Pay Rate

USD $75,900.00/Yr.

Expected Maximum Pay Rate

USD $101,510.00/Yr.

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and manages a variety of comprehensive and specialized safety and environmental programs for retail, corporate and facility operations.
  • Monitors store compliance with local, state, and federal (OSHA) safety and health standards, including, but not limited to: General Industry Safety Orders, Uniform Fire Code, Life Safety Code, Employee Right-to-Know, Community Right-to-Know, Hazardous Waste Disposal and Management, Lockout/Tagout, Powered Industrial Truck (PIT), Emergency Evacuation, Ergonomics and OSHA Recordkeeping.
  • Leads the Safety Support Program, schedules and performs site visits for store locations performing below regulatory performance standards.Reviews results with key store personnel and provides guidance to correct deficient conditions.
  • Develops recommendations and implements plans to improve the environmental, health and safety performance of the stores and to maximize compliance.
  • Develops and revises Environmental Health and Safety policies.
  • Serves as a critical resource for input, analysis and technical advice on a wide range of safety matters, including conducting risk assessments, audits, and recommending appropriate controls.
  • Analyzes claim trends and audits data to identify risks at the district and store level, presents summarized results and recommends preventive action to management.
  • Investigates incidents, general violations, and safety problems related to hazardous materials and reviews Safety Tracking tools to track and measure safety performance, compiles relevant data, and recommends appropriate courses of action.
  • Conducts unscheduled safety compliance visits at all stores with emphasis on designated “Focus Stores”. Reviews results with key store personnel and provides guidance to correct deficient conditions.
  • Conducts in-depth safety appraisals and monitors behavior-based work performance programs for stores and other facilities.
  • Participates in various leadership meetings and projects, and develops, prepares, and delivers business reviews for senior management.
  • Analyzes plans and blueprints for new construction projects and remodels to ensure that all safety-related compliance and property loss control issues have been properly identified.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams, such as Learning and Development, District and Store Leadership, and Operations Partners to develop and deliver training and certification programs regarding safe work practices. Topics include Safety Coordinator Training; Monthly Safety Topics; Pallet Jack/Forklift Training; Equipment Lockout/Tagout Procedures; Aerial Lift Training; Welding Hot Work Permit Requirements; First Aid and CPR.
  • Leads monthly safety conference calls with each district and monitors the activities of Store Safety Committees to ensure activities are completed and proper training is taking place.
  • Acts as a liaison between Raley's and government agencies, including the participation in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) citation investigations and settlement conferences. Provides guidance to stores during regulatory environmental inspections, including reviewing findings, identifying root causes, creating action plans, and validating corrections made.
  • Responsible for staying informed of emerging Environmental Health and Safety regulations, industry best practices, and technological advancements, and makes recommendations for improvement.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field plus three (3) or more years of program experience in safety, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in retail, manufacturing or distribution operations with responsibility for safety program compliance.

 

Required Knowledge

  • Intermediate knowledge of safety and claims management processes.
  • Regulations and laws in public liability and safety law.
  • Working knowledge of California Occupational Safety and Health Standards.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of latest trends in public liability and safety and claims management techniques through continued education and professional development.

 

Skills and Abilities

Certifications Required

  • Valid Driver’s License

Physical Demands - Employees may occasionally experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:

  • Driving personal vehicle.
  • Sitting; frequent sedentary work.
  • Telephone usage to communicate with internal and external customers, and vendors.
  • Viewing computer monitor; average ordinary visual acuity necessary to prepare documents, enter data into computer system and read reports from computer monitor.
  • Keyboarding; use of fingers to make small movements such as typing and mouse usage.
  • Ability to move freely around the stores including second-story offices, back rooms and production areas. 

Work Environment

Work is performed in a normal business office environment.  This position requires frequent travel to store locations, and some overnight travel to remote locations may be required.
