  • Overview

    The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for technical guidance, planning, directing and overseeing software engineers who design, develop, and implement original and vendor software solutions for business applications.   This role requires advanced software technical knowledge to oversee a specific segment of the software development team.


    1. *Manages and provides technical guidance to team members of a department or section and creates a positive experience for team members as a servant leader.
      1.         Adapts department plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges applying sound independent judgement and decision-making.
      2. Applies understanding of department objectives in the design and implementation of programs, policies and procedures.
      3. Interviews, selects, evaluates and recognizes team member results and actions.  Is accountable for the performance and results of a team within the software engineering section.
      4. Promotes a constructive work environment, organizing staff to accomplish work and meet business demands and demonstrates initiative and risk taking.
      5. Provides team with opportunities for on-going self-development.
      6.       Reviews expenses and payroll time records and approves.
    2. *Manages internal and external (vendor) software design, development and implementation in a sub-function of the IT department, for example, HR, Finance, Marketing, Merchandising.
      1. Ensures that all project requirements and user needs are met within quality and time standards.
      2. Collaborates with other IT management and staff such as network, database, security, technical support, and quality, to ensure internally developed and/or vendor software solutions meet departmental standards
      3. Responds to inquiries from corporate and store employees, management and vendors; answers questions, provides documentation, interprets policies, resolves intermediate to complex problems and discrepancies.
      4. Provides input to the department’s budget on items such as employee headcount, training needs and process improvements/initiatives.
    3. *Develops relationships with management and vendors to serve as the main contact for problem resolution, requests and inquiries.
    1. *Maintains and applies current knowledge of innovative, emerging trends in digitizing the retail grocery business and other software design practices such as DevOps, with the goal of continuous improvement of the software design and implementation process.
    2. *Evaluates existing vendor software products, sources of new and improved software applications and collaborates with procurement to negotiate the best value for the business.




    ·         BA/BS or MA/MS in Computer Science or related subject, preferred.

    ·         Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in software engineering, three (3) years of which is in a software development project leader role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


    ·         Advanced knowledge of software engineering design and implementation of three (3) or more of the following:

    -          Programming skills (Java, C#, C++, Objective C)

    -          Scripting (bash, Javascript, Powershell)


    -          ETL and API Tools


    ·         Advanced knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.


    ·         Effective verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills to department and business area management.

    ·         Effective people and project management skills.



    PHYSICAL DEMANDS – Employees may occasionally experience the following physical demands for extended periods of time:

    • Viewing computer monitor


    Work is performed in a business office environment. Occasional travel to outside locations or meetings may be required. Ability to work extended hours, as required, in support of the company’s business need.
